I just got an openning for one of my roosterfish beach seminars. The dates are any where from June 10th-19th. 4 days minimum. These trips are a lot of fun. we stay in Los Barriles at a nice hotel and fish either north or south from there. At night, I go through techniques on stalking and catching roosterfish, I teach you how to tie roosterfish flies that work, and I go over casting techniques.. In the day, we fish, fish, fish the entire East Cape from La Paz to Los Frailes. Please email me if you have any questions.
Thanks for the great response and the new blog is a hit.I am writing and posting pictures on a regular basis, so if you want up to date fishing, please go check out myblog.
Cabo Springtime Magic
Cabo is famous for wonderful spring weather as well as the hot inshore fishing, and this year hasn’t disappointed us.Its absolutely beautiful right now, sunny clear skies, 80 degrees, calm seas, good fishing, and a cold Pacifico. Now that’s what I call Paradise.
If you want to catch roosterfish on the fly or light tackle, May and June is prime time…Its my favorite time of year and I get what Gisel calls roosterfish fever. All’s I think about 24/7 is catching roosterfish, the bigger the better, but I never caught a roosterfish I didn’t like. It’s also prime time for Jack Cravelle, Sierra Mackerel and Cubera Snapper.
INSHORE FISHING:
Plenty of fun to be had inshore chasing roosterfish and jacks. On most days the fish are pretty aggressive and they are chomping down on the flies or top water plugs…Some of the roosterfish are pigs over 30 lbs, but the majority are fish are 10 to 20 lbs.. Its too much fun on the fly.The jacks are running 10 to 25 lbs and are very hungry right now, and that’s a good thing, as they are eating the fly with gusto. They fish are strong and 200 yard dashes are not uncommon, after that the battle begins and they wont quit for anything… Go-Go-Go.
We are catching some big Sierra Mackerel, but the real action wont start until the cooler water comes in from the north…Many people don’t know that May and June is Los Cabos cold water month. The cooler water pushes the fish down the coast right into our region. The cooler current then meets the warm current and the fish stack up along the coast… Its great action for Roosterfish, Jacks, Yellowtail, Cubera snapper and sierra mackerel..
OFFSHORE FISHING:
This spring the offshore fishing has been slow.
Striped marlin are a hit or miss thing right now.I guess its one fish for every other days fishing.Normally, the fishing is good in the spring, and its 3 or 4 striped marlin in a days outing.
If you go 20 to 30 miles offshore, you can get into some YF Tuna action… The Tuna are fun sized 20 -30lbs and are hitting mostly jigs or cedar plugs.Be sure to put some wire on your plugs as we are getting a few stray wahoo.
If you want fun daily updates on the fishing action, You can check out great live photos and reports at Baja Anglers blog.
The one thing you can say about Cabo is the great weather. Its 80 degrees with beautiful sunny days. It sure beats the cold and snow back home. When you get the great fishing, golfing, dinning and fun water activities its of the perfect spots on this planet...
The fishing is typical March fishing, good inshore and slow offshore. Every March is the same. The cooler 70-73 degree water moves in and so do the big humbolt squid. These quid grow over 6' long and the marlin love to eat them. The fish will follow the squid down hundreds of feet and stay there, only to come up to the surface to digest their food. The dorado move south in March and dont come back in any numbers until the water warms up in July. The YF tuna can be in Cabo anytime of the year, but they bigger schools will start showing up in late May and June.
The inshore action is very good right now.. Lots of fish, lots of action... of course we get a slow day form time to time, but thats fishing. On the most part, the fishing is a 8 out of 10.
The roosterfish have been active on most days and are on both the Pacific and Sea of Cortez. We are catching some very nice roosterfish over 20 lbs., but most of the roosterfish are fun sized 6 to 10 lbs. Being the fish they are, they will take the fly with gusto on one day and refuse the same fly the next day. Thats why I love them so much, its always a challenge. If you want to catch big roosterfish on the fly, start making your plans now. May and June is prime time for these great fish and on most years we are booked solid.
Lots of sierra mackerel right now. We have been catching big ones over 12lbs and even a few up to 15lbs. World records for sure... Our sierra mackerel are different than the Atlantic sierra mackerel. Our fish more resemble a king Mackerel in size and fight, and are much better eating. These fish are true predators and are a blast to catch, they are one of my favorites as they take a fly with gusto, have fast screaming runs, grow up to 15lbs, Oh yea, they make an awesome ceviche at days end.
Some 15 to 20 lb jacks around, most are still spawning and you can see them daisy chaining on the surface. They are difficult to catch right now, but every once in a while we can get a few to break away for their activities and eat the fly.
We are catching some big Yellowtail on yo-yo and live bait. They are down 100' or so, so they are difficult to catch them on the fly right now. In the next month or two, they will move closer to the shore line and then we will be catching them on the fly.
We are catching some snapper, but the big schools haven't moved in yet. Expect the snapper fishing to improve in the next few weeks and go crazy in May and June.
RECORDED:79 °FISHING: Great I have a new fishing report (blog) page that I will be uploading pictures and short current fishing notes on a regular basis. This blog will basically be an updated fishing log with pictures. You can check it out at http://baja-anglers.blogspot.com

This will be much more fun and you will get current updates. It will be easier for you to keep up with what’s going on in Cabo.
I will continue do the extended fishing reports.
I hope you enjoy it.
I wrote a late November fishing report.I finished it late one night after fishing, and waited to post it.I went fishing the next day and wanted to post it that night, but I couldn’t find it anywhere.
I looked everywhere for a few weeks. No luck, I finally found it on my back up computer.. I must be getting old J
For those that want to read it, I will paste it on the bottom of the current report and highlight it in blue.
Current report.
The weather in Cabo is absolutely gorgeous right now with beautiful sunny warm days with 80 to 85 degree weather. The water temperature is around 78 degree’s. It just can’t get any nicer than this!
Time for the sun!
Offhsore:
The striped marlin fishing has been really good on most days.We are catching anywhere from 1 to 2 fish a day on the fly, and 2 to 5 fish on the light tackle…The fish are close, around the old lighthouse, only a mile or so out…There are some real brutes out there up to 200 lbs, but most of the fish we are catching are 100 to 120 lbs…
A few weeks ago we had a school of striped marlin very close to the shore. These fish were tiny, under 40 lbs...In one day, Doc. Greg Vanzant from Stillwater Oklahoma caught a 20 lb striped marlin and a 15 lb sailfish on the fly. These tiny billfish were mixed up with the brutes and were competing with them in the bait-ball action. What aggressive buggers for their size.Greg has been fishing with me for years and is the star of my videos Bluewater cowboy #1 and #2… He fished with me last year and landed17 striped marlin on the fly. Now Greg knows how to fight fish and he had those fish to the boat in under a minute. Both fish were released fresh and unharmed…
Congrats to my good friend Randall Bryant. Randall landed his 1st striped marlin on the fly with me… The fish came up hot on the teaser and Randall’s cast was perfect. The fish engulfed the fly. It was a very strong fish, and put up one heck of a good fight… It was a great catch and we estimated the fish to be 130# or more.We released it unharmed…
Another good friend Doc. Jan Forszpaniak from Naples, Florida caught his 1st striped marlin on the fly with me.It was great fun, and such a kick to see his face light up when he landed his fish… Many more to come Jan!!!Jan is one of the best guys to walk the planet and it is always a hoot to fish with him.
The dorado fishing has finally slowed down…Man did we have a great dorado fall season …The dorado were everywhere, too many fish on some days, we would just get tired of catching them..
Now, we are still catching dorado, but just not as many..
Currently, on some days we are catching more than 6 nice dorado on the fly and on others we are lucky to get one or two.
YF Tuna fishing is slow right now. Not too many around, a few fish towards Gordo banks and under the porpoise..The yellowfins migrate quite a bit, and historically January is a very good month for them, so there is a very good chance that the tuna fishing will be picking up in the next few weeks..
INSHORE:
The inshore fishing is okay right now… We are catching roosterfish and sierra’s on the fly, but its hard to pick the winning days.. Some days it’s really good fishing with good action and on others it can be hard to find a fish… As we progress into January the fishing will become more stable and we will be catching lots roosterfish and other inshore fish on a daily basis.
Pictured below is Thu and her dorado on the fly.Thu is from Bend, Oregon. Way to go girl!
November report:
Fishing Offshore:
Cabo Fishing its very good right now, we are catching Striped Marlin, Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo and Dorado Offshore, and inshore we are catching Roosterfish, Jack Cravelle and some Sierra Macro.
Offshore fishing:
Striped Marlin-The Striped Marlin Fishing has been very good. We are catching 1-5 a day on the fly and light tackle, most of the Marlin are on the Pacific side just a mile or two offshore.
They are taking the fly well as well as live bait and lures.
Dorado- The Dorado are still abundant. On some days we were catching over 50 Dorado a day. Now we are catching 5 to 15 Dorado a day on the fly and light tackle. Our very good friends Peter
Bowers and his girlfriend Thu Platko from Bend Oregon caught Dorado on the fly. Picture below is Thu with a nice 20 lbs. Dorado caught on the fly. It’s was a very fun trip and we topped it off with fish Tacos for lunch!
Peter is the owner of the Patient Angler fly shop in Bend Oregon and is considered by many to the be the Guru of steelhead fly fishing in the Oregon area..
Yellowfin Tuna- The Yellowfin Tuna bite is located 25 mile offshore, find the porpoise and you will target Tuna. Must of them football size 10 to 30 lbs. There are some bigger fish up to 100 plus lbs, but most fish are 20 to 40 lbs.
Wahoo- We have been catching some very Big Wahoo up on the Pacific side on light tackle. They have eluded us so far on the fly, but we are catching them on light tackle. One great catch of note was Mr. Jeff Wettagel from Ohio who caught a very nice 60 lb. Wahoo on light 30# tackle.
Inshore fishing:
The Inshore fishing is starting to pick up. We are catching Roosterfish on the fly. There its a school of big Roosterfish roaming the Pacific side when we get in to the school's we are catching them up to 30 lbs, other wise we are catching a nice 8 to15 lbs. fun size fish.
Sierra Mackerel and Jack Cravelle are starting to show and the fishing for this species should be very good in the next few weeks.
I will make this a short report as I am fishing daily and dont have much time on my hands.
The weather in Cabo has finally changed and its absolutely beautiful. The hot days of summer are long gone. Its perfect outdoor weather with the daytime highs in the low 80s and nighttime lows in the low 70s.
We are starting to see the whales arrive. Yesterday I saw 4 humpbacks. There were two breaking adults and a Mamma and her baby. I love when we the whales arrive, its one of the things that makes Cabo so magical.
The fishing has been good, really good for dorado. Most days there are as many fish as you can catch. Mr. Tatsunari from Tokyo, Japan caught over 40 dorado his first day, with some fish going over 30 lbs. As soon as he caught one and landed it, he cast again and hooked up. After 11am, he had to stop fishing he was so tired. It was too much fun! He then went after striped marlin for a few hours. You can watch the fun short video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RymnB_Xkp28
The marlin fishing is slow right now. It was really looking up till Hurricane Rick came our way. We are raising one or two marlin a day on teasers. Really slow for Cabo standards. I expect the bait and marlin to move in any day now. In my 15 years in Cabo, we have never had a November without bait-balls and marlin. It will happen again this year, just when? Lets hope it starts soon as we are getting our yearly return of guests looking for great striped marlin action.
YF Tuna are here and there, mostly under the porpoise. We found them 30 miles outside the lighthouse. Fish up to 150 lbs, but most are 15 to 30 lb range. Can you say "Sushi time baby!".
There are already some small sierra mackerel and roosterfish along the shores, its a very god sign that they are here this early. Looks like its going to be another banger year for roosterfish.
Pictured below is Mr. Tatsunari with a nice dorado. He caught the fish on our boat flying fish #2, with Alex as our captian.

RECORDED:85 °FISHING: Great
Rick, the class 5 storm that never happened.
Hurricane Rick disrupted so me of the finest dorado fishing we have had in years. The fishing really has been something else. We were catching 30 to 40 dorado a day on the fly, and even more on light tackle. Most of the fish were around 15 to 20 lbs, but some were caught were over 40 lbs.
Not only did Rick keep us off the water for 3 days, it scared the heck out of us locals. A category 5 heading straight to Cabo. But in the end, Rick just dissipated quickly and then dropped down to a weak Tropical Storm. Then it changed course and instead of hitting Cabo, it headed southeast towards the mainland, completely missing us.
So, we had a few days of a closed port. We got some much needed rain, and no wind to speak of. There were some big swells outside, but thats normal with any storm that comes our way. I expect the seas to calm down in the next few days.
Right now, we have beautiful sunny skies, and the port is opening at 12 noon. Oh how the dorado like a good rain to wash some debris out to sea. The fishing should be as good, or maybe even better than before the storm.
The dorado fishing is really good right now. Its so much fun, with non-stop action on most days. Catch a few and then a few more come into the spread, then catch a few and some com e over to see what all the commotion is. Way too much fun!
Just ask Mike Carl from Three Rivers, MI. Mike brought his good friend Mike Mezelaars from Holland, MI. with him and they fished for 3 days with us. On the first day, they caught over 35 dorado on the fly. The second day, some weather rolled in and they only caught 20 dorado on the fly, and then the 3rd day I was able to join them and they caught over 35 dorado on the fly. Actually we stopped counting at 30 fish. The biggest dorado was around 35 lbs and the average fish was around 15 lbs, and then there were a few small fish under 10 lbs... Mike also had a sail come in to take a look, but he was only half interested and took off after a while. It was a great trip and so much fun!
For the first time this fall, I saw marlin crashing bait balls on the surface. Its a bit early, as the action usually doesn't start until later in October or early November. Its just a fantastic sign, and could mean that we are going to have another outstanding striped marlin year.
Some huge YF Tuna have been taken off the Gordo, Iman and Cabrilla banks. I heard a rumor of one fish that was close to 400 lbs. A buddy of mine showed me pictures of a dozen fish over 150 lbs. That were caught off the Cabrillo mount on live cabillitos. On the Gordo and Iman banks the tuna fishing isn't great, but the fish are there. Most folks are catching 2 to 4 fish a day in the 20 to 60 lb. range with live bait. The only problem is that we are spotting Tuna boats in the area. They are the true predators of the sea, and when see the fishing reports of tuna showing up around the Cabo area on the internet, they get here quick. After the Tunnero's have had there way with us, we feel the rape of the ocean and we are lucky to catch a few tuna here and there.
The Blue and Black marlin fishing is slow right now. Some folks are catching them here and there, especially if you target them with live bait off the banks. A 10 lb. yellowfin tuna or big skipjack are the best bet. One friend got a 500# fish off the Gordo last week.
Some fun news; Last fall I guided profession underwater photographers Doug Perrine and Marc Monocchio and Amateur Photographer Nathan Medows. The object of the trip was to find Striped marlin and Brude's whales herding and feeding on the sardine bait-balls off the Pacific banks. It was a very exciting trip and I learned quite a bit. The best part was that I got to jump into the water and video all of the explosive action. Most of you saw the video I made on YouTube. What I didn't mention was that their marlin/bait-ball photographs from this expedition ended up on the front covers and spreads of Marlin magazine in the February and March issues. Now their Brude's Whale photographs were featured in this Octobers National Geographic magazine. They took some incredible pictures of the elusive Brude's whale. If you get a chance take a look at the pictures. One especially, the one Doug took on page 70-71. Its the picture of the whale with his mouth wide open (front view). Its insane. That whale came straight at us and attacked the bait-ball, turning at the last moment to miss us. That whale came close to swallowing the both of us... That is the same moment as the video I shot with the whale eating the bait. The whale actually hit us with his mouth and then his body and pushed us out of the way. I was right next to him. If you look at the pictures and my video, you can see its all of the same footage, some taken with still cameras and some taken with my camcorder. Way cool....
I put some new videos up on my youtube site "BajaGrant".
One is a short fun video of Chuck and Louise Smith catching dorado on their honeymoon. Check out the fun at Dorado Honeymoon
The other is of Dan Dreyer and myself having a magical day catching Cubera Snapper on the fly. It was an amazing fishing, and we had a blast. Check out the video at Great Snapper Day!
I am finishing up with the video I took of Mike Carls trip, and should have it out by tomorrow. I am also going to put out a new slow motion video of whales and marlin feeding on bait balls. It will have the same footage as taken in the National Geographic, and Marlin Magazines, as well as some new never seen footage, it should be great.

Hurricane Jimena skirted Cabo today and for the most part has already passed us by. We still have some wind and rain, but nothing like it was earlier.
Looks like the storm will make landfall around Magdalena Bay tomorrow evening. Now they have something to worry about as the town of San Carlos is only about 5' above sea level.
I drove around town today and made a short youtube video of the storm for those at home. You can find it here: Hurricane Jimena
The storm wasn't that bad, we had some wind and some rain. I bet it only rained 3 or 4 " and the strongest winds we got were gusts around 80 mph. Heck I saw folks walking to work, kids playing in the streets and some folks just sitting outside enjoying the cooler weather.
Most of us here enjoy the rain, mostly because we dont see it but once or twice a year. So this will probably be the only rain we get until next year.
Tomorrow begins clean up and things will be back to normal within a day or two.
This reports is for all the folks who told me to let them know when the fishing really gets good. Well, I am letting you know now. The fishing is awesome!
It’s a sell your stocks, drop your stocks, and get on the next plane down to Cabo.
Right now, we are catching Dorado, striped marlin, sailfish, and blue marlin only a mile or two off of Cabo’s beaches.
Yesterday, we had JR Hubbard and his 10 yr. son Jacob from San Francisco fish with us. They had an outstanding father and son day on the water. JR was fly-fishing and his son was using 15 lb. test bass sized spinning outfit.
They caught 20 dorado on fly and spin and had 2 chances for striped marlin on the fly. The biggest dorado was caught by Jacob on spinning rod and was around 30#, JR’s big fish was a 20# dorado on the fly. All this action in a 5 hour trip.
JR also did a beach trip with me and caught 2 roosterfish on the fly. One smaller fish was caught blind casting and he also caught a 18 lb roosterfish sight casting. On the way home from the beach trip, I stopped in a Mango orchard that one of my friends manages. We climbed the fence (Mark Twain style) and we got a few mangos to go. These mango’s are the (kent) variety and are a very large and incredibly sweet. What a way to end a perfect day.
I took my 9 yr. old daughter Louise fishing the other day. She has been begging me to take her out for the longest time, so we made a family morning out of it; another good motive was that we had to get a few dorado for fish tacos.
I took along her 9 yr. old cousin Emilio and my beautiful wife Gisel.
We left the fly rods at home and I took a few trolling rods to get bait with, and 2 very light spinning rods. One was a Loomis 7’ 2-piece spinning rod rated 6-12 line. I had it loaded with a Shimano Stella 4000. If you are not familiar with the 4000 it’s a very small reel (trout or very light bass sized). I had a few hundred yards of 15 lb. Power Pro braided line and 3’ of 50# shock tippet.
Gisel and Louise shared the 7’ Loomis rod rated at 8-14lb line. They had 15# mono and I doubt that there was more than 200 yards on the reel.
We started out the day by catching 2 skipjacks by the rocks, then 3 dorado on the spin outfits. The dorado weren’t big fish, say 6 to 12lbs, but perfect for the kids, and they are the best eating fish (thinking of those fish tacos again).
So when Louise is bringing in her dorado, a 300# blue marlin comes up out of nowhere and tried to eat her dorado. It was great fun to see the dorado flopping around evading the blue marlin, and the coolest thing was that action happened 20’ behind the boat. The marlin finally gave up and went to look for easier prey.
A few minutes later we had two striped marlin come into our spread, and man did they get hot, but for whatever reason, they refused to eat. Then Gisel pointed to the right and yelled “marlin”. No it wasn’t a marlin, it was a school of sailfish. There was six or seven of them and they were all hot and lit up. They came screaming across in back of the stern and one attacked Emilio’s strip bait with gusto. The fish just took off, jumping everywhere. Now this was Emilio’s first day fishing and he stayed nice and calm. Emilio was using the very light-spinning rod and he set the circle hook just like I taught him... Within seconds, another sailfish ate Louise’s strip bait on the spinning, and then Alex put out the 30# outfit for Gisel (because we were out of spinning rods) and she hooked the third sailfish. The other sails were looking for something else to eat, man was it beautiful! What a shame I didn’t have more spinning rods on board.
Emilio fought that fish on the trout gear for about 15 minutes and brought that nice #80 sail to the boat. Then it was Gisel’s turn, and she had traded rods with Louise and then she landed the sail on the second light spin rod. Louise landed her sail shortly after that. They caught and released a triple on sailfish. They had way too light of gear, it was crazy fun. What a great day on the water, and one that none of us will forget, especially Emilio and Louise.
Louise wanted to share her fishing day with you, so she made a website. She wanted you to see it. She tells about her fishing day (with the help of her mother) and its filled pictures of her day on the water. It’s too cute. You can find it at Louise’s fishing day
Inshore fishing is fair, but if you are very patient, you might tangle into a huge roosterfish right now. We are catching some monsters up to 60# on light tackle, but they are being very picky on the fly. The beautiful blue water is around 80 degrees and the outside temperatures are close to 100 degrees. The cooler Pacific breeze makes Cabo very tolerable in the summer, but if you go towards the Sea of Cortez, be ready to sweat, as it gets hot and muggy that way.
CABO NEWS:
The dirt (lote 8) parking lot behind the store is now a construction site for the new cultural center. If you are driving, I recommend parking next to the dolphin center, and if you are getting a taxi, I recommend that you asked to be dropped off at the Tesoro hotel and just walk through the lobby to the marina.
Tight Lines, Grant
Pictured below is Charles Crompton from Pasadena, Ca and our Capt. Nazario with a giant roosterfish caught on light spinning rod with 15 lb. test line. They were fishing on our power catamaran flying fish 3.
The weather in Cabo right now is really nice. The days are sunny with the outside temperature around 95 degrees on the beach. What makes it really pleasant and comfortable is that there is a nice Pacific breeze during the day. Now at the airport the temperatures are close to 100 degrees, but that 10 miles inland.
The seas are a warm, around temperature is around 80 degrees. It’s perfect for fishing, swimming, snorkeling, surfing and any fun water activities.
The month of August is traditionally a very good time to fly-fish and light tackle fish in Cabo. And this year is not disappointing us. The fish have migrated into our area, and every day the fishing is getting better and better.
Dorado lovers will be happy to know that we have schools of dorado just outside the harbor. The dorado are only a mile or so offshore and we are catching them up to 50#, although most of the fish are 15 to 30# range.
There has been a good bite for YF tuna. The fish are anywhere form 15 to 30 miles out and are a mixed bag on sizes. Most of them are nice sized fish in the 30 to 60 lbs. range with some fish being caught over 100 lbs.
We have a decent sailfish bite as well as a striped marlin bite. The fish are close to shore, so long rides to the fishing grounds aren’t necessary.
We also have a very good blue marlin bite. The fish are mostly under 300 lbs. The have been taking lures best, so if you ever wanted to catch blue marlin on the fly, now is a good time.
The roosterfish bite has been good, and we are catching them up to 50- lbs. They are located on the pacific side chasing the schools of mullet up and down the beach.
John and his son Thor McCormik from Kingston Tennessee fished with us this last week.
They had a great time catching roosterfish and wrote in our daily log
Grant Thank you for the wonderful trip. The guys were excellent and we would recommend fishing with your company to anyone.
David Stanford wrote:
We are on vacation from Dallas Texas and we are having a great time. We caught 2 roosterfish over 25lbs. Baja Anglers is a great fishing company!
My beautiful wife “Gisel” that is sitting next to me right now, and suggested that I update you on Cabo news.
The new road construction on the main avenue should be finished by October 1st. I know its been a pain getting around, but it will be great when the project is finished.
She also wants to remind you that Sammy Haggar holds his birthday bash concert in October at his night club “Cabo Wabo” and if you are a fan, you will have a great time. One cool thing is that Sammy’s tickets to his birthday concerts are always free.
Also, for all the fisherman and their wives, our Boutique summer hours are from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday though Sunday. We are offering a 15% off on clothing merchandise to our guests. We have beautiful dresses that are very comfortable and light for our Cabo nights. The store also has a wide variety of men’s fishing and casual wear shirts.
